Subtraction: how to do Subtraction of One-digits
To subtract one-digit numbers, follow these steps:
1. Line up the two numbers vertically.
2. Align the digits that you will be subtracting under each other.
3. Subtract the digit in the ones place from the digit in the ones place of the minuend (the number being subtracted from).
4. If the difference is zero or negative, write down a zero and carry over a 1 to the next column on the left.
5. If there is no digit in the ones place of the minuend, borrow a 10 from the tens place and add it to the ones place.
6. Repeat step 3 for each column, working from right to left.
Example:
Subtract 8 from 17:
“`
17
– 8
——-
19
“`
In this example, we subtract 8 from 7 in the ones place to get 9. We don’t need to borrow any numbers because 7 minus 8 is not possible without borrowing. Therefore, the answer is 9.
