Subtraction: Subtraction of Fractions

Published by admin on

When subtracting fractions, we need to make sure that the denominators (bottom numbers) are the same. If they are not, we need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators and convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with that LCM as their denominator.
Once we have equivalent fractions with the same denominator, we can subtract the numerators (top numbers) and keep the denominator the same.
Here’s an example:
“`
1/4 – 2/5 = ?
“`

First, we need to find the LCM of 4 and 5. We can use the prime factorization method for this:

“`
4 = 2 x 2
5 = 5 x 1
LCM(4, 5) = 2 x 2 x 5 = 20
“`

Next, we convert 1/4 and 2/5 to equivalent fractions with a denominator of 20:

“`
1/4 = 5/20
2/5 = 8/20
“`

Now we can subtract the numerators:

“`
5/20 – 8/20 = -3/20
“`

So the answer is -3/20.
