Subtraction: how to do Subtraction of two-digits
To subtract two-digit numbers, follow these steps:
1. Write down the minuend (the number being subtracted from) on the top and the subtrahend (the number being subtracted) on the bottom.
2. Align the digits by place value, so that the ones column is lined up with the ones column of the other number, the tens column with the tens column, etc.
3. Start at the rightmost digit (ones column) and subtract the corresponding digits in each column.
4. If the digit in the minuend is greater than or equal to the digit in the subtrahend, subtract the digits and write the result in the answer space.
5. If the digit in the minuend is less than the digit in the subtrahend, borrow from the next higher place value. Write down the borrowed digit above the current digit, subtract the borrowed amount from the current digit, and continue subtracting as usual.
For example, let’s say we want to subtract 28 from 76:
“`
76
– 28
= 48
“`
In this case, we start by subtracting 8 from 6. Since 8 is greater than 6, we can simply subtract them and write the result (4) in the ones column of the answer.
Next, we move on to the tens column. We need to subtract 2 from 7, but since 7 is not greater than 2, we need to borrow from the hundreds column. We write down a 0 above the 7 and subtract 1 from it, leaving us with 6. Then we can subtract 2 from 6, giving us a final result of 48.
