Subtraction: what is basic subtraction
Basic subtraction is an arithmetic operation that involves finding the difference between two or more numbers. It is one of the four fundamental operations in mathematics, along with addition, multiplication, and division.
To perform basic subtraction, you start by aligning the numbers to be subtracted vertically. Then, you subtract the digits in each column, working from right to left. If the digit on top is greater than the digit below it, you can subtract without borrowing. However, if the digit on top is less than the digit below it, you need to borrow by subtracting 10 from the digit to its left and adding 10 to the digit being subtracted.
For example, let’s say we want to subtract 7 from 15. We would align the numbers vertically and subtract the digits in each column:
“`
15
– 7
——-
“`
The digit in the ones place is 5, which is greater than 7, so we can subtract directly:
“`
15
– 7
——-
8
“`
Therefore, 15 minus 7 equals 8.
